Hi Alain,

I started playing with Simon after FOREVER had been released. Simon had apparently heard some Volebeats
stuff I'd played on and I'd heard some rough mixes of FOREVER (courtesy of journalist Thom Jurek) and our
similar musical interests led to us playing together. I played bass and later on, guitar, on most of Simon's
live dates in the 90's. After EVERYMAN, Simon decided to record the next LP, EYES OF BLUE, in my hometown of
Detroit. The core musicians included myself, Simon, Bronwyn, and Troy Gregory. The record is really
something else. It has not yet been released, but I really think it is Simon's best work. Certain tracks
have appeared in films. It's very different from EVERYMAN. It's up there with my favorite Bowie, Roxy
Music, and Scott Walker records. I first met Simon at a Crime and the City Solution show in Ann Arbor,
Michigan. He is absolutely the best rock n' roll singer I've ever heard, period. These days I've been
busy playing with Outrageous Cherry and the Volebeats, as well as producing artists like Slumber Party,
Denise James, and The Go. I seem to play on a lot of other people's records too: Kim Fowley, Andre
Williams, Bantam Rooster, The Witches, etc. I still plan to find the time to tour again with Simon when
EYES OF BLUE is finally released!

Best regards,

Matthew Smith
